This is the List of The Top 10 Best Watch Brands of All Time
The best watch brands all have the same things in common: They have an exciting portfolio of iconic timepieces and offer consistently high product quality. This ranking will likely differ slightly from watch enthusiast to watch enthusiast. Here is my list of luxury watch brands of all time, along with the market shares of each brand (by GMV), in more detail than I can give you in the title of this post:
1. Rolex – Top of the Class
The brand boasting the crown has created many of the watches that have a great history to them, and have timeless designs. There have been numerous imitations, but no duplicate of models like the Rolex Submariner or the Rolex Datejust. Today, the Rolex Submariner is regarded as a status icon and is the world’s most replicated watch.
I really love Rolex, because their watches just feel amazing. The joy of using a Rolex bezel, turning the crown, or simply simply clasp it is just pure joy. Although the class leader may not be popular with every watch enthusiast, it’s a success for sure. Note that the success story is especially impressive as Rolex is still a young watch brand compared to others.
2. Omega – the One that will always be the Runner-Up
Omega is the biggest challenger to Rolex and is seen as the perpetual runner-up – but not so in my opinion. When it comes to quality watches, Omega has a wide selection of good ones. Particularly noteworthy is the METAS-certified Co-Axial movement, which is not only highly accurate, but also anti-magnetic up to 15,000 gauss.
The Omega Seamaster Diver 300M is one of the most exciting diving watches of the modern era and the Omega Speedmaster Professional is one of the most historically significant watches of all time. I enjoy Omega’s watches a lot, especially their presentation. They take a much more modern and playful approach than the competition – yet it never seems over the top or inappropriate. The box of a Seamaster watch, for instance, bears a wood effect similar to that of a yacht’s deck planks and the Omega Speedmaster case is the shape of an astronaut’s suitcase. Even taking the watch out of the box is an experience!
3. Patek Philippe – Fine Timepieces and Great Prestige
There are few watch connoisseurs that haven’t aspired to have a Patek Philippe. The competitor has a much wider array of models, compared to Audemars Piguet. The Patek Philippe Nautilus, the company’s most iconic piece, isn’t the only one that’s popular, though; the Calatrava and Grandes Complications lines are also well-admired. The brand caused a stir in 2024 with a brand new model: the Patek Philippe Cubitus. But, in my opinion, the most interesting watch from the Patek portfolio is the Aquanaut. The model, which first appeared in 1997, does not look back on extensive history like the famous Patek Philippe Nautilus, but is already considered an icon.
4. Vacheron Constantin – the Oldest Continuously Operating Watchmaker
Vacheron Constantin exudes its tradition. The company was established in 1755, and claims to be the oldest watchmaker in the world. The Patrimony and Overseas lines are two of the brand’s most popular collections, with the Overseas line attracting fans in recent years. The stainless steel version of the Historiques 222 (also released to commemorate the 270th anniversary of the brand) was equally popular amongst the watch community.
5. Breitling – Strength in a wristwatch
There are a lot of beautiful watches offered by Breitling. The Breitling Avenger or the Breitling Chronomat are very well recognised models, and are quite sturdy for a luxury watch. Large diameters and a tool-like design language are typical of Breitling watches, but models with smaller diameters aren’t a problem for the luxury watch manufacturer.
Both the Breitling Navitimer and the Breitling Superocean are regarded as one of the best watches of all time and the diving watch enthusiast adores the entry of the latter into the series, respectively.
6. Audemars Piguet – Inventor of the Steel Sports Watch
The quartz craze was in full swing and steel watches were still used as tools in 1972, when Audemars Piguet ventured — and dared — into the realm of the unthinkable: With legendary designer Gérald Genta, they designed the first luxury watch in all of steel.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is the reason that luxury watches are the way they are today – and how they are known. The Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 collection is home to some beautiful watches, but apart from the Royal Oak and the Royal Oak Offshore, the manufacturer doesn’t have anything particularly interesting in its portfolio.
7. The Watchmaker’s Watchmaker is a watchmaker featuring a watchmaker
It’s not the watches, it’s the movements that make Jaeger-LeCoultre famous. As a result, the old-fashioned manufacturer has become known as the watchmaker’s watchmaker. But the company’s own watches are among the best the industry has to offer as well. Although the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is likely to be the most famous of all JLC pieces, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Ultra Thin Moon is also a worthy addition to the collection. A true sports icon is even in the portfolio with the JLC Polaris!
8. “More than Just Jewelry” – Cartier
While Cartier is more famous for jewellery, the Paris-based group has a or two clutch watches up its sleeve. Of course, the latter is the Cartier Tank, but I’m especially fond of the Cartier Santos. The world’s first pilot’s watch dates back to 1904. There have been very few changes to the icon’s face since its original launch in 1911, but Cartier has added some practical enhancements like a quick-change strap and links. I’m amazed that tradition and modernity don’t have to be at odds, that’s what I love about Cartier.
9. Pilot Chronographs and Dress Watches
Anybody recall the controversial IWC posters and ads of a number of years ago? They included phrases such as: “Almost as complicated as a woman. But on time.” I’ll leave it up to you to decide on the merits of the campaign, but it was certainly effective; after all, IWC was talk of the community at the time.Today’s advertising is more provocative than ever, and so has been the quality of the watches. With the IWC Ingenieur, the portfolio includes a great all-rounder by legendary watch designer Gérald Genta, aviation fans will delight in the IWC Pilot’s Watch, and lovers of elegant watches have both the IWC Portofino and the IWC Portugieser to turn to.
10. TAG Heuer – committed to Motorsport
Heuer is a brand that was once simply known as TAG and has come up with some of the most memorable motorsport timepieces ever. These are the Autavia, Monaco and Carrera. The brand now has a diverse portfolio that is still connected with its sporting heritage. For beginners, a TAG Heuer Formula 1 or TAG Heuer Aquaracer is a popular option, given their more affordable cost.
